[:ja]オレグ・アルテミエフ宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影したキューバです。

キューバは南北アメリカ大陸間、及びラテンアメリカとヨーロッパを結ぶ要路に位置しています。アメリカとは「アメリカ合衆国の裏庭」とも呼ばれるほど関りが深かったのですが、キューバ革命により、南北アメリカ大陸で初めて反米・親ソ連の社会主義政権が1959年に成立。その後は「カリブに浮かぶ赤い島」と形容されることもありますが、2015年にラウル・カストロ国家評議会議長とオバマ大統領の首脳会談が実現し、両国の関係が大きく前進しました。

Astronaut Oleg Artemyev captured from ISS Cuba.

Political unrest and instability led to Batista’s ousting in January 1959 by the 26th of July Movement, which afterwards established communist rule under the leadership of Fidel Castro. Since 1965, the state has been governed by the Communist Party of Cuba. After a long separation, in 2014 United States President Barack Obama announced the re-establishment of diplomatic relations with Cuba, pushing for Congress to put an end to the embargo.
