[:ja]記念すべき1000号は、ジェシカ・メイヤー宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影した日本の首都、東京です。新型コロナウイルスの感染が拡大しており、昨日緊急事態宣言が発令されました。
江戸幕府の所在地であった江戸が1868年に「東京」に名称変更され、1869年に、日本の国の政治の中枢機能が移転され、京都に都としての位置付けを残したまま、「東京」に奠都されました。太平洋戦争直後時点では東京23区の人口は280万人まで減っていたとされますが、戦後には東京は目覚ましい復興を遂げ、人口は増え続け、2019年時点で、東京都で約1300万人まで、「首都圏」（東京圏）では3700万人まで増えました。その後も拡大を続けた東京は、ついには神奈川県（横浜市）や千葉県（千葉市）、埼玉県（さいたま市）など隣接自治体（県庁所在地）との間の切れ目もほぼ消失し、周辺の都市と融合することで一種の巨大な都市圏を形成し、世界1位の人口とGDPを擁する世界最大のメガシティの中核的な部分ともなっています。
