インド西海岸平野は西ガーツ山脈とアラビア海に挟まれた狭い地域で、北はグジャラート州から始まり、マハーラーシュトラ州、ゴア州、カルナータカ州、ケララ州を縦断します。アーメダバード(アフマダーバード)はグジャラート州の主要都市で、インド8大都市の1つです。産業は農業、綿織物業に加え、近代的な都市で郊外に工場が多く、経済的に恵まれています。また、イスラム教徒が比較的多く(住民の2割程度)、多くのモスクが建てられています。また、ムンバイ市域人口は1,840万と世界でも有数で、周辺の大都市をも含めた都市圏人口は、2016年時点で2,288万人であり、世界第6位の巨大な大都市圏を形成しています。ムンバイは国内随一の商業及び娯楽の中心都市であり、国全体のGDPのうち6%、工業製品の25%、海運の40%、資本取引の70%を計上しています。

Mumbai has an estimated population of 18.4 million and including the neighbouring regions, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region has 22.9 million. Mumbai is the financial, commercial and entertainment capital of India. It generates 6% of India’s GDP and 70% of capital transactions.
