[:ja]NASAの地球観測衛星Terraが撮影したメキシコと中南米の焼き畑からの煙です。毎年4月頃に、メキシコ南部を中心に栽培が盛んなサトウキビプランテーションの野焼きが行われます。焼畑の煙が航空機や自動車の運行の邪魔をする事も多いようです。
焼畑農業は山岳地帯の広範な地域において重要な食料生産システムです。焼畑による灰が中和剤や肥料となる、土壌の窒素組成が変化し、土壌が改良される、などの効果があるとされています。一方、焼き畑による大気汚染も深刻で、大きな社会問題となっています。

NASA’s Terra satellite captured Mexico‘s active burnings. In the Latin America, slash-and-burn usually takes place in April. Smokes are reported to frequently cause issues in air and ground transportation.
Slash-and-burn agriculture, or fire–fallow cultivation, is a farming method that involves the cutting and burning of plants in a forest or woodland to create a field called a swidden, and is widely used in the South Asia. It is believed that the ash from burning functions as neutralizer of the soil acidity and adjusts nitrogen content.
