ボルネオ島北西部の東マレーシアに位置するクチンは、南シナ海やサラワク川の河口に臨む河港で、ボルネオ観光の拠点でもあります。街の中央を流れるサラワク川の南岸は、商業施設や官公庁等のある市街地。住民は華人、マレー人、20以上の先住民からなり、人口は約33万人です。古くから南シナ海航路の要地であったクチンは、サラワク王国の首都として発展し、現在でもコロニアル調やマレー風の建物が立ち並びます。多民族都市のクチンは、中華街やインド人街もあり、料理のバラエティーも豊富で、東南アジアの各地の趣を肌で感じ取ることができ、東洋のエキゾチックな雰囲気が漂う街並みとなっています。また、サラワク州は、マレーシア国内において高度な自治権を有しており、州外との行き来には入境管理が行われ、マレーシア国民であっても身分証明書(MyKadと呼ばれる国民身分証)が必要となります。

Kuching is the capital and the most populous city in the state of Sarawak in Malaysia. The city is situated on the Sarawak River at the southwest tip of the state of Sarawak on the island of Borneo. After the formation of Malaysia in 1963, Kuching retained its status as state capital and was granted city status in 1988. Since then, the Kuching city is divided into two administrative regions managed by two separate local authorities. Kuching is a major food destination for tourists and the main gateway for travellers visiting Sarawak and Borneo.
