[:ja]ISS滞在中の大西宇宙飛行士が撮影したエジプトの新スエズ運河です。縦に並走している右側が新運河で、2015年8月6日に開通式が挙行されました。
理由はわかりませんが、旧運河にはたくさんの船舶が見えますが、新運河には見えません。
スエズ運河は一部が狭くて一方通行になっており、航行する船舶は地中海や紅海、バッラ・バイパス、グレートビター湖で一時待機しなければなりませんでした。新運河により、滞船なしの双方向同時運行が可能になり、時間のロスを解決したのです。

以下の地図上のピンク色が新たに建設された新運河です。

Astronaut Onishi captured Egypt’s New Suez Canal. Of the two parallel canals one running on the right is the new canal. The opening ceremony was held on Aug. 6, 2015.
From this satellite image while many ships are recognized on the old canal on the left, no ships are seen on the new canal, with no reason confirmed.
Existing old Suez Canal has been one-way traffic for its width creating time loss issues for passing ships queuing. With the new canal two-way traffic was realized with no waiting.
