[:ja]宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影した米国ミズーリ州のセントルイスです。世界的に大雨による洪水が続いていますが、セントルイスでも大雨による影響が出ています。

セントルイスは、ミシシッピ川とミズーリ川の合流点に位置する商工業都市で、大都市圏人口は約281万人です。1764年にフランス人が毛皮の取引所を設け、ルイ9世に因んでサン=ルイと命名。対岸のイーストセントルイス市とともに、ミズーリ、ミシシッピの水運を生かした水上交通の要衝として発展しました。現在でも、モンサント、エマソン・エレクトリック、RGAなどフォーチュン500にランクインする企業は10社近くに上り、また、マスターカード、マイクロソフトなど数多くの大企業が拠点を置いています。その他、大学研究施設も多く、医薬品、医療機器、バイオテクノロジーなどケミカルの分野で全米をリードしています。

Before European settlement, the area was a regional center of Native American Mississippian culture. The city of St. Louis was founded in 1764 by French fur traders Pierre Laclède and Auguste Chouteau, and named after Louis IX of France. Today, the city has a diverse economy with strengths in the service, manufacturing, trade, transportation, and tourism industries, and is home to 9 of the 10 Fortune 500 companies based in Missouri, including Emerson Electric, Monsanto, RGA, etc.
