[:ja]セルゲイ・リャザンスキー宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影した、オーストラリア大陸とメラネシアの１つであるニューギニア島間のトーレス海峡です。
トレス海峡の海峡幅は最も狭い地点で約150kmで、国際海峡となっていますが、水深は非常に浅く、島と岩礁で迷路のようになっているなど航行するには非常に危険な環境です。南にオーストラリア大陸最北端クイーンズランド州のヨーク岬半島、北にパプアニューギニアの西部州があり、海峡の中にはトレス海峡諸島と呼ばれる島々が点在しています。「トレス海峡」という名は西洋人で初めてこの海峡を通過したとされるスペイン人海洋探検家のルイス・バーエス・デ・トーレスに因んでつけられたものです。

Astronaut Sergey Ryazansky captured from ISS Torres Strait.
The Torres Strait is a strait between Australia and the Melanesian island of New Guinea. It is approximately 150km wide at its narrowest extent. To the south is Cape York Peninsula, the northernmost extremity of the Australian mainland. To the north is the Western Province of Papua New Guinea. It is named after navigator Luís Vaz de Torres, who passed through the strait in 1606. The strait links the Coral Sea to the east with the Arafura Sea and Gulf of Carpentaria in the west. Although it is an important international sea lane, it is very shallow (7-15m water depth), and the maze of reefs and islands can make it hazardous to navigate.
