Mauritius in the Indian Ocean is on the brink of an environmental catastrophe after a bulk carrier struck a coral reef off its coast in late July, an accident that has led to a large oil spill visible from space. The Japanese-owned MV Wakashio, hit a coral reef off Mauritius’ southeast coast, near Pointe d’Esny, on July 25. In the weeks since, a crack has appeared on its hull and its low-sulfur fuel oil started to spill out. Anxious residents of the Indian Ocean island nation of Mauritius have stuffed fabric sacks with sugar cane leaves to create makeshift oil spill barriers as tonnes of fuel leaking from a grounded ship put endangered wildlife in further peril. The Mauritius government on Aug. 8 declared an environmental emergency as satellite images showed a dark slick spreading in the turquoise waters near wetlands that the government called “very sensitive”.

The local scenery on the ground is as follows.
