ノバスコシアはラテン語で「新たなるスコットランド人の国（New Scotland）」を意味します。シグネクト地峡（Isthmus of Chignecto）で大陸と繋がり、三方を大西洋に囲まれている半島です。イギリスとフランスの間での植民地の闘争が続いた歴史がありますが、現在のノバスコシアの主な民族グループは多い順にスコットランド系、イングランド系、アイルランド系、フランス系、ドイツ系等であり、ヨーロッパ系の合計は全人口の96.8%を占めます。伝統的な、漁業を含む天然資源に基づいた経済は、ここ数十年間で多様化してきており、農業や鉱業、海洋油田およびガス田の経済、映画産業や観光業の重要度が増しています。

Nova Scotia is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and including numerous bays and estuaries. The land has been inhabited by the indigenous Miꞌkmaq people for thousands of years, only after colonial period did Britain and France fought for. Nova Scotia’s traditionally resource-based economy has diversified in recent decades. Today the fishery suffered a sharp decline due to overfishing in the late 20th century, but other industry such as aerospace and tourism contributes substantially to the provincial economy.
Peggys Point Lighthouse in Peggys Cove is one of the major tourist attraction spots in the province.
