人口7万強のトルクメンバシはカスピ海に面する港町で、トルクメニスタンの唯一の港町であり、アゼルバイジャンの首都バクーへのフェリーが発着します。また、ウズベキスタンの首都タシュケントへのカスピ海横断鉄道の起点で、交通の要衝でもあり、付近は石油や天然ガスが豊富で、市内に大規模な石油精製工場があります。第2代大統領グルバングル・ベルディムハメドフのもとで、リゾート地にすべく活発な投資が行われています。

Türkmenbaşy is a city in Balkan Region in Turkmenistan, on the Krasnovodsk Gulf of the Caspian Sea. As the terminus of the Trans-Caspian Railway, it was an important transportation center. Second President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow pledged in 2007, to invest one billion dollars into a project slated to turn Türkmenbaşy into a major tourist resort. In recent years, the city made large-scale reconstruction historic district, entrance roads, vital infrastructure. Western Turkmenistan has major petroleum and natural gas reserves, and Turkmenistan’s largest oil refinery is in Türkmenbaşy.
