Almaty, former capital until 1998 when it was relocated to Astana, is the largest city in Kazakhstan, with a population of about 2 million people, about 11% of the country’s total population. Almaty is still the major commercial and cultural centre of Kazakhstan, as well as its most populous and most cosmopolitan city. The city is located in the mountainous area of southern Kazakhstan near the border with Kyrgyzstan in the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau at an elevation of 700–900m. Almaty generates approximately 20% of Kazakhstan’s GDP, accounts for above 20% of government revenues and 60% of bank credits. One of the largest industries in Almaty is finance, and its financial exports make it a large contributor to Kazakhstan’s balance of payments.
