シラキュースは、米ニューヨーク州中央部に位置する都市圏人口70万人を超える商工業都市で、市名はイタリアシチリア島の都市シラクサに由来しています。オノンダガ郡の郡庁所在地であり、ニューヨーク州中央部の経済・教育の中心地です。元々は製造業の中心地でしたが、この20年ほどは産業が衰退しています。現在のシラキュースの主要産業の一つは、有名私立大学シラキュース大学などの教育機関を要する教育産業、研究などです。

Syracuse is the fifth-most populous city in New York State following New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, and Yonkers. Syracuse was named after the classical Greek city Syracuse, a city on the eastern coast of the Italian island of Sicily. It is the economic and educational hub of Central New York, a region with over one million inhabitants. Formerly a manufacturing center, Syracuse’s economy has faced challenges over the past decades as industrial jobs have left the area. Syracuse’s top employers now are primarily in higher education, research, health care, and services; some high-tech manufacturing remains.
