ドバイは、アラブ首長国連邦を構成する首長国の一つで、アラビア半島のペルシア湾の沿岸に位置する、同国第2の中心都市です。人口は約331万人（2019年9月時点）。中東屈指の世界都市並びに金融センターであり、21世紀に入ってから多くの超高層ビルや巨大ショッピングモールを含む大型プロジェクトが建設されるなど、世界的な観光都市となっています。2008年後半に起きたアメリカのサブプライムローン問題に端を発した世界経済の低迷（リーマン・ショック）により、これまで急激な勢いで伸び続けてきたドバイにも影響がありました。外国企業からの投資引き上げや地元企業の資金繰り悪化と、それに伴う多数の建築工事や計画の中断が報じられた。またその結果起きた外国人労働者の失業や経済低迷報道を受けた観光客の減少などの影響をうけたものの、「中東の金融センター」としての地位はゆるぎなく、成長を続けています。

Dubai is the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the capital of the Emirate of Dubai. Located in the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula on the coast of the Persian Gulf, Dubai aims to be the business hub of Western Asia. It is also a major global transport hub for passengers and cargo. Oil revenue helped accelerate the development of the city, which was already a major mercantile hub. Due to the financial crisis in 2008, the city’s economy experienced a major downturn. Today, Dubai’s economy recovered from the recession and now relies on revenues from trade, tourism, aviation, real estate, and financial services.
