アフリカ大陸最小の国土面積を持つガンビアは、西アフリカ西岸に位置し、北大西洋に面しています。ガンビア川の河口を除いた全土をセネガルに取り囲まれており、河口に首都バンジュールがあります。ガンビア川両側沿岸の細い部分が国土であるため、東西が320kmにわたるのに対しその最大幅は48kmにすぎず、非常に細長い国土となっています。ガンビア川沿岸は、下流にはマングローブが、それより上流には森林が広がり、河道から離れた国土の大部分はサバンナ地帯となっています。農業が主産業で、主に自給農業が行われており、コメやトウモロコシなどが栽培されています。

The Gambia is the smallest country within mainland Africa, and is surrounded by Senegal, except for its western coast on the Atlantic Ocean. The Gambia is situated on both sides of the lower reaches of the Gambia River, the nation’s namesake, which flows through the centre of The Gambia and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. About 1,300km2 (11.5%) of The Gambia’s area are covered by water. The Gambia has a liberal, market-based economy characterised by traditional subsistence agriculture, a historic reliance on groundnuts (peanuts) for export earnings.
