キリスト教のフランシスコ会の修道士が創設者の聖フランシスコを街の名に付けたのが地名の由来です。ロサンゼルスと共にカリフォルニア州の経済、工業の中心地として知られており、金融センターとしてアメリカ西海岸では随一の重要性を持っています。2017年の調査によると、世界6位の金融センターであり、アメリカの都市ではニューヨークに次ぐ2位です。対岸のオークランドなどを含めた都市圏の人口は412万人に上り、全米第12位の規模です。気候は地中海性気候に属し、一年を通して気温の差が比較的小さく、気候的にも住みやすい都市とされています。

San Francisco was founded on June 29, 1776, when colonists from Spain established Presidio of San Francisco at the Golden Gate and Mission San Francisco de Asís a few miles away, all named for St. Francis of Assisi. A popular tourist destination, the city is known for its cool summers, fog, steep rolling hills, eclectic mix of architecture, and landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, the former Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, Fisherman’s Wharf, and its Chinatown district. The tech sector’s dominance in the Bay Area is internationally recognized and continues to attract new businesses and young entrepreneurs from all over the globe. San Francisco is now widely considered the most important city in the world for new technology startups.
