エカテリンブルクは、ロシア連邦の中央部に位置する大都市で、スヴェルドロフスク州の州都です。ウラル山脈中部の東側（アジア側）斜面に位置し、イセチ川が流れます。40km西には、ヨーロッパとアジアの境界線が走っています。人口は約145万人で、ロシア国内ではノヴォシビルスクに次ぐ4番目に人口が多く、ウラルの首都と言われ発展著しい都市です。ニジニ・タギルなどと並び州内の産業の中心で、機械工業、金属工業、製鉄や非鉄金属の精錬などが行われています。軍需産業と呼ばれる産業に関連する企業が多く、旧ソ連時代も軍需産業の一大拠点でした。内陸性気候で寒暖の差が大きく、冬の川や湖は凍結し、気温は-40℃程度まで落ち込むなど寒さは厳しく、雪も非常に多く積雪は70㎝に達します。

Astronaut Sergey Kud-Sverchkov captured from ISS frozen Yekaterinburg, Ruissia in the new year.
Yekaterinburg (Екатеринбу?рг, Екатеринбург) is the largest city and the administrative centre of Sverdlovsk Oblast and the Ural Federal District. The city is located on the Iset River in Western Siberia, with a population of roughly 1.5 million residents. Yekaterinburg is the fourth-largest city in the country, and has been dubbed the “Third capital of Russia.” The city was one of the host cities of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The city is currently experiencing an economic and population boom, which resulted with some of the tallest skyscrapers of Russia being located in the city. Yekaterinburg is home to the headquarters of the Central Military District of the Russian Armed Forces, as well as the presidium of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Due to the Ural Mountains and the West Siberian Plain, the weather in Yekaterinburg is characterised by sharp temperature fluctuations and weather anomalies: in winter, from frost at -40C to thaw and rain; in summer, from temperatures above 35C to frosts.
