プエルトリコは、カリブ海北東に位置するアメリカ合衆国の自治的・未編入領域で、コモンウェルスという政治的地位にあります。北部は雨が多く熱帯雨林が形成されており、南部は乾燥しサバナが形成されている火山島です。ラム酒生産、観光、製薬、農漁業などが主な収入源ですが、特に観光業の占める割合は大きく、アメリカ合衆国に移住したプエルトリカンの送金も大きな収入源です。

Today, San Juan is Puerto Rico’s most important seaport and is the island’s manufacturing, financial, cultural, and tourism center. The population of the Metropolitan Statistical Area, including San Juan and the municipalities of Bayamón, Guaynabo, Cataño, Canóvanas, Caguas, Toa Alta, Toa Baja, Carolina and Trujillo Alto, is about 2.6 million inhabitants; thus, about 80% of the population of Puerto Rico now lives and works in this area.
