ボルチモアは、米メリーランド州にある、同州最大の都市で、どの郡にも属さない独立都市です。古くから天然の良港として知られ、1729年に南部産タバコの輸出港として開かれ発展した。首都ワシントンD.C.の外港としての機能を有する大西洋で極めて重要な港湾都市であり、2020年にイギリスが発表した「グローバリゼーションと世界都市研究ネットワーク」(GaWC)ではガンマ＋の都市に評価されるなど、アメリカ東海岸の世界都市に数えられます。重工業が衰退した後、ボルチモアではサービス産業が勃興し、現在ではJohns Hopkins病院および大学が雇用の2大提供者となっています。

Baltimore is the largest independent city in the country and was designated as such by the Constitution of Maryland in 1851.
Prior to European colonization, the Baltimore region was home to the Susquehannock Native Americans. British colonists established the Port of Baltimore in 1706 to support the tobacco trade, and established the Town of Baltimore in 1729. The Battle of Baltimore was a pivotal engagement during the War of 1812, culminating in the bombardment of Fort McHenry, during which Francis Scott Key wrote a poem that would become “The Star-Spangled Banner”, which was eventually designated as the American national anthem in 1931. After a decline in major manufacturing, heavy industry, and restructuring of the rail industry, Baltimore has shifted to a service-oriented economy. Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins University are the city’s top two employers.
