ミャンマーでは初期の文明としてはモン族がイラワジ川流域に栄えましたが、南下してきたビルマ族が1050年代にパガン朝を建てました。第二次世界大戦後、1948年にビルマ国としてイギリスから独立してからのほとんどの期間、ミャンマーは横行する民族紛争に巻き込まれ、無数の民族グループが世界で最も長く続いている内戦の一つに巻き込まれてきました。2011年には、2010年の総選挙で軍事政権が正式に解散し、名目上の文民政権が発足、アウンサンスーチー氏や政治犯の釈放とともに、同国の人権記録や対外関係が改善され、貿易などの経済制裁が緩和されました。しかし、2021年2月1日、ミャンマー軍はアウンサンスーチー国家顧問と大統領を拘束し、非常事態を宣言、軍は政権が国軍トップのミン・アウン・フライン最高司令官に「移譲された」とし、政権を奪取したと発表しました（2021年ミャンマークーデター）。軍に抗議する大規模なデモが最大都市ヤンゴンなどで連日行われ、当局が締めつけを強める中でも抗議活動は全土に広がっています。ミャンマーの人口のうち70％をビルマ族が占め、カチン族、シャン族、カレン族などの少数民族が25％を占めます。宗教は住民の大半（85％）が上座部仏教を信仰し、他にヒンドゥー教などがあります。

Early civilisations in Myanmar included the Tibeto-Burman-speaking Pyu city-states in Upper Burma and the Mon kingdoms in Lower Burma. In the 9th century, the Bamar people entered the upper Irrawaddy valley, and following the establishment of the Pagan Kingdom in the 1050s, the Burmese language, culture, and Theravada Buddhism slowly became dominant in the country. For most of years after its independence from the Great Britain in 1948, the country has been engrossed in rampant ethnic strife and its myriad ethnic groups have been involved in one of the world’s longest-running ongoing civil wars. In 2011, the military junta was officially dissolved following a 2010 general election, and a nominally civilian government was installed. This, along with the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and political prisoners, had improved the country’s human rights record and foreign relations and has led to the easing of trade and other economic sanctions. However, the Burmese military remained a powerful force in politics and, on Feb.1, 2021, again seized power in a coup d’état. Since the coup, protesters have turned out in huge numbers across Myanmar.
