スリランカは、南アジアのインド亜大陸の南東にポーク海峡を隔てて位置し、首都はスリ・ジャヤワルダナプラ・コッテです。1948年2月4日、イギリスから自治領（英連邦王国）のセイロンとして独立、1972年にはスリランカ共和国に改称しました。外交面では、非同盟の立場を維持しつつ、歴史的・文化的にも関係が深い隣国インドと、政治や経済、安全保障上、極めて重要な国として良好な関係維持に努めています。ヒンドゥー教の神話では、インドとはラマと呼ばれる橋で結ばれていました。アダム橋と呼ばれる、ところどころ海面に顔を出す石灰岩礁が連なり、その昔完全な天然の陸橋であったが、1480年の嵐で壊れたとされています。画像からもわかりますが、島の北部は平坦地が続き、南部に向かうにつれて山地が多くなります。気候は熱帯性であり高温多湿で、海岸部・低地では年平均気温27~28°Cですが、高地の気候は冷涼です。イギリス植民地時代の19世紀から20世紀にかけて、スリランカはシナモン、天然ゴム、紅茶といった作物のプランテーション経済下にありましたが、これらの作物は現在でも同国の主要な輸出品目として残っています。2020年から始まった世界的な新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大は、スリランカの観光業を直撃するとともに外貨の流入を減少させることとなりました。スリランカ政府は、スリランカ料理に不可欠なターメリックの輸入規制を実施、ターメリックの流通量不足については国内栽培を強化する方針を示しました。

Sri Lanka is geographically separated from the Indian subcontinent by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait. Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is its legislative capital, and Colombo is its largest city and center of commerce. Its geographic location and deep harbors made it of great strategic importance from the time of the ancient Silk Road through to the modern Maritime Silk Road. The country’s trade in luxury goods and spices attracted traders of many nations, creating Sri Lanka’s diverse population. The majority of the population are from the Sinhalese ethnicity, while a large minority of Tamils have also played an influential role in the island’s history. Moors, Burghers, Malays, Chinese, and the indigenous Vedda are also established groups. While the production and export of tea, rubber, coffee, sugar, and other commodities remain important, industrialisation has increased the importance of food processing, textiles, telecommunications, and finance. The country’s main economic sectors are tourism, tea export, clothing, rice production, and other agricultural products.
