マレ（マーレ）は、マレ島、ヴィリンギリ島、人工島フルマーレ（フルマレ）、空港島（フルレ島）等で構成される街です。カーフ環礁の真ん中にある北マレ環礁の南端に位置しています。モルディブの政治・経済の中心地で、貿易港でもあります。目覚ましい発展を遂げる観光業のほか、主要産業の1つである漁業での水産物の加工も行われます。島の陸地全体が市街地化しており、人口は133,412人（2014年）[1]。モルディブの人口の1/3から1/4ほどが集中しており、多くの外国人労働者も存在する。東隣のフルレ島にはヴェラナ国際空港がある。マレは人口密度が世界一とも言われており、人口圧力を軽減するためにヴェラナ国際空港と陸続きの人工島「フルマーレ」を造成し移住を促しており、2019年現在では約4万人が暮らしています。

Astronaut Soichi Noguchi captured from ISS Male (Malé), the capital of Maldives.
With a population of 227,486 and an area of 8.3km2, it is also one of the most densely populated cities in the world. The city is geographically located at the southern edge of North Malé Atoll (Kaafu Atoll). In recent years, the island has been considerably expanded through land-filling operations. Over the years, Malé has been the center of political protests and milestone events. A commercial harbour is located on the central island and serves as the heart of all commercial activities in the country. The central island is heavily urbanised, with the built-up area taking up essentially its entire landmass. Many Maldivians and foreign workers living in other parts of the country find themselves in occasional short term residence on the island since it is the center of administration and bureaucracy.
