1200万人超の人口を有する大阪都市圏は関西の経済・文化の中心地で、古都・副都としての歴史を持ちます。豊臣氏が滅んだ大坂夏の陣で大坂は荒廃しましたが、江戸幕府によって水路が発達し、水の都として復興した大坂は日本全国の物流が集中する経済・商業の中心地となり、「天下の台所」と呼ばれて繁栄しました。堂島米会所では世界で最初の先物取引が行われました。大阪府は新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大により政府に緊急事態宣言の再発令を要請しました。3月20日以降、重症者が急激なペースで増加を続け、確保病床を一気に上回っています。英国で流行する変異株の影響が大きく、重症者に占める若年層の割合も高まっています。

Osaka is the capital city of western Japan and is the second largest metropolitan area in Japan with over 12 million inhabitants. Situated at the mouth of the Yodo River on Osaka Bay, the city serves as a major economic hub for the country. Historically a merchant city, Osaka has also been known as the “nation’s kitchen” and served as a center for the rice trade during the Edo period. Prime Minister Suga has decided to declare another state of emergency in Osaka Prefecture as a surge in severe cases of COVID-19 strains its medical system, while Tokyo is set to seek the same move in a matter of days.
