アルジェは、北アフリカ、アルジェリアの首都で、西部地中海に面しています。都市圏人口は約400万人と推定されており、地中海の要塞として古くから発達した都市です。アルジェ港からは鉄鉱石、リン鉱石、ブドウ酒、コルク、オリーブ、オレンジ類を輸出しています。都市は、海岸付近の低地に発達した近代的な部分と標高100m以上の高地にある古都部分に分けられます。海岸付近は「北アフリカのパリ」という言葉に相応しく、フランス領アルジェリア時代の影響でノートルダム大聖堂に代表されるフランス風の建築物が立ち並んでいます。内陸の旧市街部はイスラム風の建築物が多く、モスクが数多く点在している。また、映画「望郷」の舞台として知られるカスバ（城壁）は1992年世界遺産に登録されました。カミュ作の小説『異邦人』の舞台としても有名です。

Algiers is the capital and largest city of Algeria with 5 million estimated population of the larger metropolitan city. Algiers is locatated on the west side of a bay of the Mediterranean Sea. The modern part of the city is built on the level ground by the seashore; the old part, the ancient city of the deys, climbs the steep hill behind the modern town and is crowned by the Casbah or citadel, 122m above the sea. The casbah and the two quays form a triangle. Algiers has a Mediterranean climate. Its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea aids in moderating the city’s temperatures.
