[:ja]オレグ・ノビツキー宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影したキューバです。
キューバは、カリブ海の大アンティル諸島（西インド諸島の一部）に位置し、本島とその周辺の島嶼からなります。西はユカタン海峡を挟んでメキシコのユカタン半島と、北はフロリダ海峡を隔てて北に145km先のアメリカのフロリダ半島と向かい合います。キューバ革命により、南北アメリカ大陸で初めて反米・親ソ連の社会主義政権が1959年に成立、「カリブに浮かぶ赤い島」と形容されてきました。その後、アメリカのバラク・オバマ政権は従来のキューバ敵視政策を転換し、2015年には54年ぶりに国交が回復され、2016年にはオバマ大統領がハバナを訪問しました。

Astronaut Oleg Novitskiy captured from ISS Cuba.
Cuba is located in the northern Caribbean where the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean meet, and a country comprising the island of Cuba as well as Isla de la Juventud and several minor archipelagos which are only 150km from Key West. Open corruption and oppression under Batista’s rule led to his ousting in January 1959 by the 26th of July Movement, which afterwards established communist rule under the leadership of Fidel Castro. 55 years later, In 2014, United States President Barack Obama announced the re-establishment of diplomatic relations with Cuba, pushing for Congress to put an end to the embargo. Recently, the end of the thaw under the Trump Administrarion has resulted in a tightening of travel restrictions, making it harder for U.S. citizens to travel to Cuba for treatment.
