7月14日は、フランス共和国の成立を祝うパリ祭 (Fête nationale) でした。1789年7月14日にフランス王国パリの民衆が同市にあるバスティーユ牢獄を襲撃したバスティーユ襲撃はフランス革命のはじまりとされています。

Bastille Day is the French National Day (Fête nationale), which is celebrated on July 14th each year. The Storming of the Bastille occurred in Paris on the afternoon of July 14th, 1789. The medieval fortress, armory, and political prison in Paris known as the Bastille represented royal authority in the center of Paris. The prison contained just seven inmates at the time of its storming but was a symbol of abuses by the monarchy; its fall was the flashpoint of the French Revolution.
