サルデーニャは、地中海ではシチリア島に次いで2番目に大きな島で、イタリア本土との歴史的・地理的・文化的な差異が大きいことから特別自治州という位置付けになっています。カリャリはサルデーニャ自治州の州都で、周辺地域を含む人口約15万人の基礎自治体（コムーネ）です。カリャリは新石器時代より人が定住していました。町は海と肥沃な平野に挟まれた好ましい位置を占め、周囲を2箇所の湿地に囲まれており、内陸からの敵の攻撃を防御するのに適していたと伝えられています。1870年代から、イタリア統一運動と共に、市は急速な成長の一世紀を経験し、多くの目をひく建築物は、市長オットーネ・バカレッダ時代の19世紀終わりから建てられました。今日では、カリャリはイタリア全土のうちで最大級の魚市場を持つコムーネの一つであり、広大な売り場が一般・卸両方に開放されています。

Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. For its indigenous language and the other minority languages spoken on the island (Sassarese, Gallurese, Algherese Catalan and Ligurian Tabarchino), Sardinia is granted and classified as one of the 5 autonomous regions in the country. Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia, with about 155,000 inhabitants. An ancient city with a long history, Cagliari has seen the rule of several civilizations. Under the buildings of the modern city there is a continuous stratification attesting to human settlement over the course of some five thousand years, from the Neolithic to today. It is also Sardinia’s economic and industrial hub, having one of the biggest ports in the Mediterranean Sea, an international airport, and the 106th highest income level in Italy (among 8,092 comuni), comparable to that of several northern Italian cities.
