ベナンは、西アフリカ、大西洋のギニア湾に面する、南北に長い国です。憲法上の首都はポルトノボですが、多くの政府機関はポルトノボの西にある最大都市コトヌーにおかれており、ここが事実上の首都となっています。コトヌーにはベナン最大の港湾が存在し、ベナンの貿易の大部分を担っているほか、鉄道および道路を利用して内陸国であるニジェールの貿易においても大きな役割を果たしています。コトヌーはノクエ湖の南に位置し、気候区分ではサバナ気候（Aw）に属しています。主要な工業品はパーム油、醸造、織物、セメントで、他にも自動車や自転車の組み立て工場や製材所があります。コトヌー港の主な輸出品は石油製品、ボーキサイト、鉄です。

Benin is a tropical nation in West Africa, highly dependent on agriculture, and is a large exporter of cotton and palm oil. Substantial employment and income arise from subsistence farming. The official language of Benin is French, with several indigenous languages such as Fon, Bariba, Yoruba and Dendi also being commonly spoken. With 2.4 million population, Cotonou is the economic center of Benin, although Porto-Novo is the official capital. The urban area continues to expand, notably toward the west. The city lies in the southeast of the country, between the Atlantic Ocean and Lake Nokoué.
