[:ja]トマ・ペスケ宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影した仏領ギアナのクールーです。

クールーは、南アメリカフランス領ギアナの北部に位置するコミューンで、ギアナ宇宙センターがある事で有名です。首都カイエンヌからは約50kmのところに位置します。クールーはクールー川河口に位置し、域内には小さな湖が点在します。熱帯雨林がありますが、乾燥したサバンナもあります。18世紀には、カイエンヌからやってきたイエズス会宣教師たちが先住民カリナ族布教のため定住地を作りましたが、1762年にイエズス会がフランスで追放されたことにより、共同体は崩壊しました。探検家がやってきた時には修道士たちが暮らす小さな家があるのみでした。20世紀中頃には人口約800人足らずで特に何もない小さな町だったが、フランスがこの小さな町をアリアン・ロケット発射地として選び、1967年にギアナ宇宙センターを設立して以来、クールーの人口は1万5000人以上に増え、現在では宇宙関連の産業で栄える町となっています。ロケット基地の警備のためにフランス外人部隊の第3外人歩兵連隊が駐留しています。

[Earthview Wonders] No.1441: Kourou, French Guiana🇬🇫

Kourou is a commune in French Guiana, an overseas region and department of France located in South America. Some 60km northwest of the French Guianese capital Cayenne the Kourou River empties into the Atlantic Ocean. At the mouth of this river sits the town of Kourou, which is ringed by 4 hills, with the Singes and Condamine mountains not far behind. The Guiana Space Centre, where the European Space Agency starts missions, is located a little behind and outside the town. Part of the town and the islands are closed during rocket launches. Like most of French Guiana, Kourou has an equatorial climate bordering on a tropical monsoon climate with a short dry season centered between the months of August and October when the Intertropical Convergence Zone is furthest north.
