[:ja]宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影したベリーズのブルーホールです。
カリブ海に面する中米ベリーズには世界第2位の広さのサンゴ礁があり、ベリーズ珊瑚礁保護区として世界遺産（自然遺産）に登録されています。この中のライトハウス・リーフと呼ばれるサンゴ礁には、直径313m、最深部は約130mの巨大なブルーホールがあり、グレート・ブルーホール（現地の人々には「海の怪物の寝床」）と呼ばれています。ちなみに、ブルーホールは、かつての洞窟や鍾乳洞といった地形が何らかの理由により海中へ水没し、浅瀬に穴（hole）が空いたように見える地形です。

Astronaut on board ISS captured the Great Blue Hole, Belize.
The Great Blue Hole is a giant marine sinkhole off the coast of Belize. It lies near the center of Lighthouse Reef, a small atoll 70km from the mainland and Belize City. The hole is circular in shape, 318m across and 124m deep. It has a surface area of 70,650m2. It was formed during several episodes of quaternary glaciation when sea levels were much lower. Analysis of stalactites found in the Great Blue Hole shows that formation took place 153,000, 66,000, 60,000, and 15,000 years ago. As the ocean began to rise again, the cave was flooded. The Great Blue Hole is a part of the larger Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
