南米パラグアイの産業でもっとも重要な働きをしているのは農業であり、GDPの27%、輸出の84%を占め、世界でも3番目の大豆輸出国です。輸出品目は大豆、小麦、農畜、電力が主ですが、近年は甘味料や健康食品、化粧品の原料としてしられるステビア生産にも力を入れています。パラグアイは内陸国でありながらもパラグアイ川とパラナ川を通して大西洋に出ることができますが、貿易の大部分（GDPの38%）を隣国ブラジルとアルゼンチンとの交易に頼っています。両国およびウルグアイとの協定により、パラグアイは各国に自由港を持ちます。

The economy of Paraguay is a market economy that is highly dependent on agriculture products. In recent years, Paraguay’s economy has grown as a result of increased agricultural exports, especially soybeans. In 2018, Paraguay was the 6th largest producer of soy in the world, with 11 million tons produced (behind the US, Brazil, Argentina, China and India). In the same year, the country produced 5.3mt of maize, and 6.1mt of sugarcane, ranking 21st in the world in both; this year, the country also produced 3.3mt of cassava, 892,000t of rice, 722,000t of wheat, 223,000t of orange, 116,000t of yerba mate, 107,000t of sorghum, in addition to smaller productions of other agricultural products. Paraguay has the economic advantages of a young population and vast hydroelectric power. Its disadvantages include the few available mineral resources, and political instability.
