キエフは5世紀後半に建設されたポリャーネ族の集落から発展した東欧最古の都市で、キリスト教の聖地の一つです。都内にある聖ソフィア大聖堂とキエフ洞窟大修道院は世界遺産に登録されています。ドニエプル川が町の中心を流れていますが、この川は北ロシアの標高220mのヴァルダイの丘に源流を発し、東ヨーロッパ平原を南へ流れて、最終的には黒海に流れ込んでいます。

Astronaut Thomas Pesquet captured from ISS Kiev (Kiyv), the capital of Ukraine, an important industrial, scientific, educational, and cultural centre of Eastern Europe. It is reported the Russian forces are surrounding the city, and we only wish peace for the region.
During its history, Kiev, one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, passed through several stages of great prominence and relative obscurity. The city probably existed as a commercial centre as early as the 5th century. Originated on the right bank, today Kiev is located on both sides of River Dnieper, which flows southward through the city towards the Black Sea.
