[:ja]野口聡一宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影したニュージーランドの首都ウェリントンです。
ウェリントンの名前は、ワーテルローの戦いでフランス皇帝ナポレオン1世に勝利した初代ウェリントン公爵アーサー・ウェルズリーに敬意を表してつけられたもので、マオリ語ではテ・ワンガヌイ＝ア＝タラあるいはポネケ（Poneke）と言います。ウェリントンは海と丘陵地に挟まれ、市街地を形成できる平地が少ないため、ニュージーランドのほとんどの都市よりも人口密度が高くなっています。政治の中心地であり、ニュージーランド議会と全ての行政機関の本庁舎が置かれています。ウェリントンは北島の南西端に位置し、北島と南島を分ける水路であるクック海峡に面しています。また、クック海峡を渡って常に吹きつけてくる風にさらされていることから、ウェリントンはニュージーランド人の間では「風のウェリントン (Windy Wellington)」として知られています。

Astronaut Soichi Noguchi captured from ISS Wellington, the capital of New Zealand.
Wellington (Māori: Pōneke) is located at the south-western tip of the North Island, between Cook Strait and the Remutaka Range. Wellington features a temperate maritime climate, and is the world’s windiest city by average wind speed. In addition to governmental institutions, Wellington accommodates several of the nation’s largest and oldest cultural institutions, such as the National Archives, the National Library, New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa and numerous theatres. It is also the center of New Zealand’s film and special effects industries, and increasingly a hub for information technology and innovation, with two public research universities. Wellington’s economy is primarily service-based, with an emphasis on finance, business services, and government.
