エルサレムは世界最古の都市の一つであり、古代イスラエル・ユダ王国の首都で、エルサレム神殿がかつて存在したと伝えられています。イエス・キリストが処刑された地でもあり、ユダヤ教・キリスト教・イスラム教共通の聖地となっています。イスラエルはエルサレムが自国の「首都」であると宣言しているものの、国際連合など国際社会はこれを認めておらず、イスラエルの首都はテルアビブであるとみなしており、パレスチナ自治政府は東エルサレムをパレスチナ国の首都と主張しています。地中海から内陸部に入った標高800メートルの小高い丘の上に位置しています。ユダヤ人が住む西エルサレムと、アラブ人居住区である東エルサレムから成り立っています。

Astronaut Soichi Noguchi captured from ISS Jerusalem, the capital of Israel.
Jerusalem is on a plateau in the Judaean Mountains between the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea, it is one of the oldest cities in the world, and is considered holy for the three major Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The city straddles the Green Line between Israel and the West Bank; both Israelis and Palestinians claim Jerusalem as their capital. Due to this long-running dispute, neither claim is widely recognized internationally. According to the Hebrew Bible, the city was conquered from the Jebusites by the Israelite king David, who established it as the capital of the United Kingdom of Israel. David’s son and successor, Solomon, later commissioned the building of the First Temple in the city. Today, the status of Jerusalem remains one of the core issues of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict and its peace process.
