リスボンは金融や商業、出版、娯楽、芸術、貿易、教育、観光と言った様々な分野で重要な都市であり、南ヨーロッパではイスタンブール、ローマ、バルセロナ、マドリード、アテネ、ミラノに次いで多くの観光客が訪れる都市です。世界的にも古い歴史がある都市の一つで、西ヨーロッパでは最古の都市であり現代のヨーロッパの他の首都であるロンドンやパリ、ローマなどよりも数百年遡ります。1147年、ポルトガル王国の建国者アフォンソ1世下のレコンキスタでのリスボン攻防戦で、ポルトガルはムーア人からリスボンを奪回、以来、リスボンはポルトガルの主要な政治、経済、文化の中心となっています。

Lisbon is the capital and the largest city of Portugal, with an estimated population of 500,000. The city lies in the western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus. The city is the 9th-most-visited city in Southern Europe, after Rome, Istanbul, Barcelona, Milan, Venice, Madrid, Florence and Athens, with 3,320,300 tourists in 2017. Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and one of the oldest in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris, and Rome by centuries. In 1147, as part of the Reconquista, crusader knights led by Afonso I of Portugal besieged and reconquered Lisbon.
