オレグ・アルテミエフ宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影したカタールの首都ドーハです。
カタールは周囲をペルシア湾（アラビア湾）に面する立憲君主制国家です。1940年に発見された油田によって潤沢な資金を得て、労働力として外国人を移民させることにより、20世紀後半以降近代的に発展を遂げました。2019年現在も石油や天然ガスの関連産業が国内総生産の6割強を占めます。人口は約285万人ですが、このうちカタール人は1割強で、残り9割弱が南アジアや東南アジアからなどの外国人労働者となっています。イスラム教を国教としており、カタール人のうち約9割がスンナ派に属し、約1割がシーア派に属しています。また、首都ドーハは中東地域の著名な金融センターの一つです。

Astronaut Oleg Artemyev captured from ISS Doha, the capital of Qatar.
Qatar’s sole land border is with neighbouring Saudi Arabia to the south, with the rest of its territory surrounded by the Persian Gulf. The discovery of oil in 1940 completely transformed the state’s economy, and now the country has a high standard of living for its legal citizens. With no income tax, Qatar is one of the countries with the lowest tax rates in the world, and the unemployment rate in June 2013 was 0.1%. Doha is the commercial capital of Qatar and one of the emergent financial centers in the Middle East.
