[:ja]シェーン・キンブロー宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影した米オハイオ州のシンシナティです。
シンシナティは、ケンタッキー州との州境になっているオハイオ川の河畔に位置しています。人口は約31万人で、コロンバス、クリーブランドに次ぐ州内で第3の都市です。1788年に創設され、その2年後にシンシナティ協会から名を取ってシンシナティという地名がつけられました。19世紀前半から中盤にかけては、シンシナティは食肉加工の中心地・オハイオ川の河港都市として発展し、1850年には全米第6の都市へと成長しました。しかし、19世紀も後半に入り、交通の主役が蒸気船から鉄道へと移ると、その連節点として高い成長を遂げるようになったシカゴやセントルイスに追い抜かれ、シンシナティは成長しながらも、その相対的な地位は低下、その後も20世紀中盤までは緩やかではあるものの成長を続け、1950年には人口50万人を超えたが[4]、その後は減少に転じています。シンシナティの玄関口となる商業空港は、ダウンタウンの南西約15km、シンシナティ・ノーザンケンタッキー国際空港（IATA: CVG）です。3,100haの広大な敷地を有し、直行便がパリのシャルル・ド・ゴール空港を含め、国内外40都市に就航しているほか、航空貨物のアマゾン・エアの中枢機能が立地しています。加えて、同空港はDHLが世界でわずか3港だけ置いている「スーパーハブ」のうちの1港であり、旅客のみならず物流においても、重要度の高い空港となっています。

Settled in 1788, Cincinnati is located at the northern side of the confluence of the Licking and Ohio rivers, the latter of which marks the state line with Kentucky. As a rivertown crossroads at the junction of the North, South, East, and West, Cincinnati developed with fewer immigrants and less influence from Europe than East Coast cities in the same period. However, it received a significant number of German-speaking immigrants, who founded many of the city’s cultural institutions. By the end of the 19th century, with the shift from steamboats to railroads drawing off freight shipping, trade patterns had altered and Cincinnati’s growth slowed considerably. The city is served by Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (IATA: CVG) which is actually located in Hebron, Kentucky. The airport is a focus city for Allegiant Air and a global hub for both Amazon Air and DHL Aviation.
