[:ja]野口聡一宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影したシカゴです。7月4日は独立記念日ですが、シカゴ近郊のハイランドパーク（Highland Park）で行われていた独立記念日のパレードで銃の乱射事件があり、多くの方が死亡・負傷したと報じられています。亡くなられた方にはご冥福をお祈りいたします。
シカゴは、ニューヨークとロサンゼルスに次ぐ人口を持つ北アメリカ屈指の世界都市です。19世紀後半から20世紀中盤までアメリカ国内における鉄道・航空・水運の拠点として、また五大湖工業地帯の中心として発展しました。摩天楼がそびえ立つアメリカ型都市の発祥とされ、ダウンタウンの高層建築はシカゴ派として知られ、近代建築史における重要局面をなしました。1973年に建てられたシアーズ・タワー（現在はウィリス・タワーに改称）は1998年まで世界一の高層建築でした。マコーミック・プレイスコンプレックスは北アメリカ最大のコンベンション・センターであり、オヘア空港は全米有数の過密な空港として知られます。「シカゴ」の語源は、この地に先住するアルゴンキン語族インディアンの言葉の、Shikaakwaという植物であると言われています。

Astronaut Soichi Noguchi captured from ISS Chicago. July 4 is the Independence Day of the U.S., and sadly a mass shooting took place in Highland Park near Chicago, and 6 people were reported to have been killed. Prayers for those who lost their lives on one of the most important memorial days.
Chicago is the third-most populous city in the U.S., following New York City and Los Angeles. Located on the shores of freshwater Lake Michigan, Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1837 near a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed. It grew rapidly in the mid-19th century. It is the site of the creation of the first standardized futures contracts, issued by the Chicago Board of Trade, which today is part of the largest and most diverse derivatives market in the world, generating 20% of all volume in commodities and financial futures alone. O’Hare International Airport is routinely ranked among the world’s top six busiest airports according to tracked data by the Airports Council International.
