ウィーンは200万人弱を擁するヨーロッパ有数の世界都市です。第一次世界大戦までは、オーストリア＝ハンガリー帝国の首都として、ドイツ帝国を除く中東欧の大部分に君臨し、さらに19世紀後半までは神聖ローマ帝国やドイツ連邦を通じて、形式上はドイツ民族全体の帝都でもありました。クラシック音楽が盛んで、過去にモーツァルトやベートーヴェン、シューベルトなど、多くの作曲家が活躍したことから「音楽の都」・「楽都」とも呼ばれます。ウィーンは、ドナウ川に沿ってヨーロッパを東西に横切る道と、バルト海とイタリアを結ぶ南北の道（琥珀街道）という2つの道が交差するところに生まれた町で、アルプス山脈とカルパティア山脈の間を流れるドナウ川のほとりにあるため、交通の要衝です。現在のウィーンは、国際機関本部の集積地ともなっています。

Vienna with about 2 million inhabitants is the 6th-largest city proper by population in the EU and the largest of all cities on Danube river. Until the beginning of the 20th century, Vienna was the largest German-speaking city in the world, and before the splitting of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in World War I, the city had two million inhabitants. Today, it is the second-largest German-speaking city after Berlin. Vienna is host to many major international organizations, including the United Nations, OPEC and the OSCE. Vienna is known as the “City of Music” due to its musical legacy, as many famous classical musicians such as Beethoven and Mozart called Vienna home.
