プラハは、チェコ共和国の首都で、人口約120万人を要する同国最大の都市です。市内中心部をヴルタヴァ川（ドイツ語名：モルダウ）が流れています。古い町並み・建物が数多く現存しており、カレル大学は中欧最古の大学です。尖塔が多くあることから「百塔のプラハ」とも呼ばれます。ティコ・ブラーエが天体観測を行った天文塔もそのひとつです。ウィーンよりも遥かにドイツ寄りに位置し、ボヘミア王を兼ねたドイツ人が神聖ローマ帝国皇帝をつとめ、この地を首都にドイツ民族（および彼らが支配する中欧多民族帝国）に戴かれていた時期もあることから、独自のスラブ文化と併せて一種の国際性も古くから備えた都市となっています。

Prague with 1.3 million population is the largest city in the Czech Republic. On the Vltava River (German name Moldau), Prague has a temperate oceanic climate, with relatively warm summers and chilly winters. Prague is a political, cultural, and economic hub of central Europe, with a rich history and Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectures. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia and residence of several Holy Roman Emperors, most notably Charles IV (r. 1346–1378). It was an important city to the Habsburg monarchy and Austro-Hungarian Empire. The city played major roles in the Bohemian and the Protestant Reformations, the Thirty Years’ War and in 20th-century history as the capital of Czechoslovakia between the World Wars and the post-war Communist era.
