ジッダは、サウジアラビア西部のマッカ州（メッカ州）にある紅海に臨む都市で、首都リヤドに次ぐ人口340万人を擁する大都市です。イスラム教が興って近郊のメッカが聖地になると、巡礼者の中継地点として栄えるようになりました。現在では、ハッジ（大巡礼）の時期になると毎年200万人ものイスラム教徒が、ジッダを経由してメッカへ巡礼するため、ジッダ港やキング・アブドゥルアズィーズ国際空港は巡礼者を乗せた船や飛行機で一杯になります。メッカの玄関口としての歴史地区は、2014年にUNESCOの世界遺産リストに登録されました。また多くの国際機関や金融機関が本拠を置く経済都市でもあります。

Jeddah is a city in the Hejaz region of Saudi Arabia and the country’s commercial center. Established in the 6th century BC as a fishing village, Jeddah’s prominence grew in 647 when the Caliph Osman made it a major port for Indian Ocean trade routes, channelling goods to Mecca, and to serve Muslim travelers for Islamic pilgrimage. Since those times, Jeddah has served as the gateway for millions of pilgrims who have arrived in Saudi Arabia, traditionally by sea and recently by air. Jeddah is the principal gateway to Mecca, the holiest city in Islam, 65km to the east. Economically, Jeddah is focusing on further developing capital investment in scientific and engineering leadership within Saudi Arabia, and the Middle East.
