[:ja]シェーン・キンブロー宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影した米カリフォルニア州のモンテレー半島です。
モントレー半島はサンノゼの南100kmほどの場所にある、太平洋に面した半島です。1602年、セバスティアン・ビスカイノがスペイン政府から海岸の詳細な地図を作るように命じられ、現在のモントレー港に12月16日に到着して、当時のヌエバ・エスパーニャ副王であったモンテレイ伯爵ガスパール・デ・スニガ・イ・アセベードから名を得てプエルト・デ・モンテレイ(Puerto de Monterrey、モンテレイ港)と命名しました。モスランディング沖からはじまるモントレー・キャニオン（モントレー峡谷）は、ちょうどモントレー湾の中心にあり、世界最大の海底の峡谷のひとつです。その深さと大きさはグランド・キャニオンに匹敵します。この峡谷から上がってくる世界的にも稀な海洋深層水の湧昇がモントレー湾の生態系に大きく影響しており、多くの海棲哺乳類（ラッコ、ゼニガタアザラシ、ハンドウイルカなど）が棲息しています。

Astronaut Shane Kimbrough captured from ISS Monterey Peninsula, U.S.
The Monterey Peninsula anchors the northern portion on the Central Coast of California and comprises the cities of Monterey, Carmel, and Pacific Grove, and the resort and community of Pebble Beach. Monterey was founded in 1770 by missionary Junípero Serra and explorer Gaspar de Portolà. While the fishing industry was very important to the area, so was tourism. The Hotel Del Monte, opened in 1880, was the first true resort complex in the United States and was the forerunner to today’s Pebble Beach Company.
