ブエノスアイレスは、人口300万人、都市圏人口1500万人を擁するアルゼンチンの首都で、ラプラタ川に面しています。スペイン語で「buenos（良い）aires（空気、風）」の意味で、船乗りの望む「順風」が街の名前になったものです。独立当時は「偉大な田舎」と呼ばれる人口5万人程の小さな町でしたが、サルミエント政権による欧州化や、文明化政策の実施以降数多くの移民がイタリア・スペインなどから渡来したことから、中南米の中でも最も欧州的な街になりました。1970年代以降のアルゼンチン経済の悪化に伴い、南米最大の都市はブラジルのサンパウロに移ってしまったものの、現在でもブエノスアイレスはスペイン語圏の都市として重要性を保っています。ただ、内陸部との差異が大きすぎるため、しばしば「国内共和国」と呼ばれます。サッカー強豪国であるアルゼンチンは、2022年のサッカーワールドカップ決勝でフランスを破り、優勝しました。

Astronaut Koichi Wakata captured from ISS Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. Colonia del Sacramento of Uruguay is on the opposite shore as well.
Buenos Aires with city population of 3 million and urban population of 15 million, is located on the western shore of the Río de la Plata, on South America’s southeastern coast. “Buenos Aires” can be translated as “fair winds” or “good airs.” It is known for its preserved eclectic European architecture and rich cultural life. It is a multicultural city that is home to multiple ethnic and religious groups, contributing to its culture as well as to the dialect spoken in the city and in some other parts of the country. This is because since the 19th century, the city, and the country in general, has been a major recipient of millions of immigrants from all over the world, making it a melting pot where several ethnic groups live together.
