キーウェストは、フロリダ半島から南西に伸びるフロリダ・キーズ諸島の西端のキーウェスト島に位置しており、米国本土48州で最南端の都市です。キューバ・ハバナの北171kmに位置します。キーウェストという地名は、人骨がこの島で発見されたことから、スペイン語の「カヨ・ウェソ（Cayo Hueso；人骨の島）」が由来となっています。キーウェストにはフロリダ半島から続く国道US-1号線が通っています。島から島へと延々とさんご礁の海の上にかかる32の橋を渡っていくこの道路はオーバーシーズ・ハイウェイと呼ばれ、途中、有名なセブンマイル橋を渡ります。 同市は漁港、海軍基地、船舶の救助基地として有名である。また、1年を通して気候が温暖で、ビーチを有し、観光・保養都市としても人気が高く、作家のアーネスト・ヘミングウェイはこの地をこよなく愛しました。

Key West is an island in the Straits of Florida with 12km2(6x2km) area. It lies at the southernmost end of U.S. Route 1, the longest north–south road in the U.S. It is is about 153km north of Cuba at their closest points. Key West is a port of call for many passenger cruise ships.[13] The Key West International Airport provides airline service. Naval Air Station Key West is an important year-round training site for naval aviation due to the tropical weather. Two of the most notable buildings in Old Town, occupied by prominent 20th-century residents, are the Ernest Hemingway House, where the writer lived from 1931 to 1939, and the Harry S. Truman Little White House, where the president spent 175 days of his time in office.
