2023年2月6日未明、トルコ南東部のシリア国境に近いガジアンテプ市付近で6日未明、マグニチュード7.8の大きな地震がありました。また、同日午後にも、近くでM7.5の揺れが起き、余震と見られています。トルコやシリアの当局によると、2月9日時点で、両国で確認された死者は8日までに計12,000人を超えており、さらに増える見通しです。シリア北部では、地震の起きる前から、内戦が続き、多くの人々が家を失い、難民となっていました。氷点下の中で、1500万人ともいわれる難民が、食料を含め生活必需品の不足に苦しんでいましたが、今回の地震により、状況はさらに悪化する可能性があります。亡くなられた方々にご冥福をお祈りします。

Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti captured from ISS Syria.
In the earlly hours of Feb. 6, 2023, 7.8 magnitude quake struck near Gaziantep, followed by a 7.5 magnitude tremor hours later. As of Feb. 9, more than 12,000 people have been killed, but there are warnings the death toll could continue to surge. Many of the hardest-hit communities are in northwestern Syria, where people who have already been displaced several times by the ongoing conflict are among those whose homes were destroyed in the quakes. They are without adequate shelter, food and basic necessities as temperatures plunge well below freezing. Even before this crisis, more than 15 million people in Syria were in need of humanitarian assistance–with aid efforts receiving less than half of the necessary funding.
