バイカル湖は、シベリアのブリヤート共和国とイルクーツク州・チタ州に挟まれた三日月型の湖です。湖水面積は31,494km2で、カスピ海(塩湖)や急速に面積を縮小しているアラル海を除くとアジア最大、最大水深は1,642mと世界で最も深い湖です。また、世界で最も古い古代湖でもあります。

Lake Baikal is a rift lake in Russia, located in southern Siberia, between Irkutsk Oblast to the northwest and the Buryat Republic to the southeast. Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake by volume in the world, and deepest lake with a maximum depth of 1,642m. It is also considered the world’s oldest lake at 25 million years.
