上海市は中国の直轄市で、人口約2400万人を擁する同国の商業・金融・工業・交通などの中心地です。上海は長江河口南岸に位置し、河口島である崇明島、長興島、横沙島などを含みます。北部から東部は江蘇省・西南部は浙江省、東は東シナ海（東海）に面しています。市街地は、長江の支流である黄浦江を遡ったところにあります。黄浦江の河口は呉淞口と称した港があり、崇明島などの島や市外への航行に用いられています。2020年9月の調査によると、上海は世界3位の金融センターであり、東京や香港を抑えて初めてアジア首位に立ちました。

Shanghai is one of the 4 direct-administered municipalities of China. The city is located on the southern estuary of the Yangtze River, with the Huangpu River flowing through it. With a population of approx. 24 million, it is the most populous urban area in China and the most populous city proper in the world. Shanghai is a global center for finance, research, technology, manufacturing, and transportation, and the Port of Shanghai is the world’s busiest container port. Originally a fishing village and market town, Shanghai grew in importance in the 19th century due to both domestic and foreign trade and its favorable port location. The city was one of five treaty ports forced open to European trade after the First Opium War. The Shanghai International Settlement and the French Concession were subsequently established. Shanghai has been described as the “showpiece” of the booming economy of China.
