[:ja]トーマス・ペスケット宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影した南スーダン北部を流れる白ナイル川です。白ナイル川は、ビクトリア湖を源流とするアフリカ北東部を流れる河川で、青ナイル川と共にナイル川の支川を形成、ナイル川全体の水量の約20%を占めます。青ナイルよりも白く濁った水の名前から、この支流は「白ナイル」と呼ばれるようになりました。

ちなみに、2月20日に南スーダン政府と国連は、紛争が続く南スーダンの一部地域で、干ばつなどの影響もあり、飢饉が発生し、500万人近くが緊急援助を必要としていると発表しています。

The White Nile formed at Lake Victoria is one of the two main tributaries of the Nile along with the Blue Nile. When in flood, the Sobat River tributary carries a large amount of sediment, adding greatly to the White Nile’s color.
The local scenery on the ground is as follows.
For reference, famine has been declared on Feb. 20 by the South Sudan government and United Nations in the areas of prolonged civil war and heavy drought. They claim that 5 million people need urgent support.
