ロサンゼルス市は約390万人、広域では約1,500万人を擁する大都市で、1932年と1984年の2度、夏のオリンピックを招致しています。
2016年、アメリカのシンクタンクが公表したビジネス・人材・文化・政治などを対象とした総合的な世界都市ランキングにおいて、世界第6位の都市と評価されました。2014年の都市の経済規模 (GDP) では東京、ニューヨークに次いで世界第3位です。
