[:ja]NASAの地球観測衛星Suomi NPPが捉えた南アジアの焼き畑です。南インドにおいて、3月下旬から4月下旬に焼畑が行われます。焼畑の煙が航空機や自動車の運行の邪魔をする事も多いようです。
焼畑農業はタイ・ラオス・ベトナム・中国・バングラデシュ・インドなどアジア山岳地帯の広範な地域において重要な食料生産システムです。焼畑による灰が中和剤や肥料となる、土壌の窒素組成が変化し、土壌が改良される、などの効果があるとされています。
しかし、最近では利用面積の拡大と休閑期間の短縮が急速に進んでいます。最近では最短4年まで短縮され、土地が充分に回復しないので結果的に収量が落ち、それを補うために焼畑の面積が増えるという悪循環にはまる地域も多くあるようです。

NASA’s Suomi NPP satellite captured South Asia’s active burnings. In the South Asia including Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, China, Bangladesh and Inidia, slash-and-burn takes place from March to April. Smokes are reported to frequently cause issues in air and ground transportation.
Slash-and-burn agriculture, or fire–fallow cultivation, is a farming method that involves the cutting and burning of plants in a forest or woodland to create a field called a swidden, and is widely used in the South Asia. It is believed that the ash from burning functions as neutralizer of the soil acidity and adjusts nitrogen content.
In the recent years, however, the cycle of the slash-and-burn is shotened and consequently results in decreased crop production due to insufficient time for the land to recover its nutrient factor.
